plans for a ply sailing cat. can these be used for Building A Boat of foam sandwitch and fiberglass /?
basicly different materials for the same plans yeah
yes i get that . i was refering to a large cat say 40ft, my main concern was weight and displacment, anyway thanks
capt. john, i do not have any plans as yet, and thankyou for the links i will look them up and check out some plans . i would like to build in west system ply rather than cold molded ply, so the hull will be more of one solid thing with no need for brass fastenings, rather than under stress iof you get my drift. .how long did it take you to build
I have built 2 catamarans 44′ using the method of fiberglass over plywood. This is your “plywood” plans with a layer (or in my case 2 layers) of fiberglass cloth over the plywood.
Both vessels (one sail, one power) are very strong, solid, and move through the water extremely nice and smooth. So. I don’t know why you would want to “change” the designed material. What benefit do you expect to find?
Foam core (or foam sandwich) will only cost you an arm and a leg more money – and fiberglass? You can lay that right on, and fiberglass over your plywood – this makes for a very solid and quite hull – which unlike using a mold for a fiberglass only hull – your vessel’s hull will not sound like the entire ocean is about to come crashing through it.
So, the options you have asked about, are defeating the purpose of your designer’s building plans. Both methods will not only cost you a ton more money – but also a ton more labor – and in both cases, you will end up with a boat that is not as strong or as solid as the fiberglass over plywood.
You don’t mention where you obtained your plans. But, if you obtained your plans from a legitimate source – then the designer has down all the work of determining weight, displacement, center of balance, and center of gravity all for you already. Gppd sailing 40′ catamaran plans can be found at the links below. Also on the Glen-L.com site, you can find great information on using today’s high tech boat resins for laminating, encapsulating, gluing all your wood, and fiberglassing over plywood.
If however you obtained plans from a “questionable” source (like the free plans) circulating around the Internet
– I would trash them anyway. You don’t want to spend all that money on materials, and all your time for labor – and end up with a boat that won’t sail a straight line or won’t turn without slowing or stopping.

plans4boats review – How To Build A Boat
As a Boat Building enthusiastic (although far from a boat building pro), I was pleased to be introduced to Plans4Boats. This complete boat building plan package is offered by the renowned Danish boat builder, Daniel Holden. I don’t know about you, but I’m always looking for good Boat Building Plans and kits, and $49 for over 250 Boat Plans seemed like a great deal to me – especially given that the entire package is covered by a full money back guarantee.....
