Wooden Boat Plans – Amateurs Should Consider The Stitch-N-Glue Option

There is a lot to think about before beginners should start searching online for Wooden Boat plans to use with their first Boat Building project. The time and space needed to build your own boat goes beyond what a typical DIY home woodworking project needs. You must choose a method of construction that best suits your experience, so it will be important to do some reading on several boat building methods.

The easiest and most common method for inexperienced boat builders is the stitch and glue method. There are several good reasons for choosing stitch and glue boat building over some other techniques. No complex woodworking skills are needed and you use basic tools you already own. A huge factor is that the materials needed are easily found at your local lumber yard. Provided you have a quality, easy to follow set of Wooden Boat Plans, and depending on the size of your boat, this simple boat building technique can usually be completed in just one weekend!

Most other boat building techniques first involve building a frame, and then use a variety of different methods for attaching wooden planks to the frame. The stitch and glue method works well for beginners because it does not require building a frame first, nor does it require any special tools. The only materials that will be needed are a set of wooden boat plans, plywood, epoxy, copper wire a fiberglass sheath and paint. In addition to being a very easy procedure, it has the reputation of creating boats that are lighter, stronger and faster than many other types of boats

This stitch and glue boat building project works by taking the plywood planks that have been cut to the specifications found in your wooden boat plans, and then connect or “stitch” two panels together with copper wire to gradually form the boat. Epoxy “glue” is used to seal the seams. When the glue is dry, the wire is either cut out, or the ends snipped off. Easy to follow directions teach you how to add a finishing layer of protection and strength with an epoxy soaked fiberglass sheath. Finish it off with several coats of varnish or paint.

To fully experience the joy and satisfaction of building a wooden boat from beginning to end, it really is best to buy a quality set of wooden boat plans, and gather all the materials yourself. This is much cheaper than boat building kits, and most importantly, lets you become actively involved in the whole process each and every step of the way. When you proudly launch your finished boat, you will realize that you personally created everything you see or touch. Just think how much fun you will have telling people that all you had to do is stitch and glue to build your boat!

were can i get plans to make a for mast for a sailboat?

Unless you have a rolling mill and the shop tools to make heavy hollow metal extrusions, your best bet is to BUY A MAST. With all the used masts in the marine junk yards because of the hurricaines, you can pick up a used mast for $100 to $200.

Wooden Boat Plans

As a Boat Building enthusiastic (although far from a boat building pro), I was pleased to be introduced to Plans4Boats. This complete boat building plan package is offered by the renowned Danish boat builder, Daniel Holden. I don’t know about you, but I’m always looking for good Boat Building Plans and kits, and $49 for over 250 Boat Plans seemed like a great deal to me – especially given that the entire package is covered by a full money back guarantee.....
